Maureen Mwanawasa – Mayor on a Mission
Simply put my vision for Lusaka is for a clean city, healthy families and honest leadership.
On the launch of my plan for Lusaka I’m sharing the details of how we can achieve this vision.
In the immediate term the priority has to be garbage collection and sanitation because the health of our people, and in particular our children, depends on it. For the sake of peace and order we also have to depoliticise the bus stops, markets and taxi ranks. Once in office I plan to commission a buildings audit straight away, as we embark on a programme to name the roads that will help bring order to the city, improve security and efficiency and prepare us for long-term planning and growth.
Over a two-year period my priorities will be creating council township offices, training council police, conducting a land audit and fighting corruption in land allocation, and improving the business environment.
By the end of our term in office I will have introduced solar streetlights, delivered improved access to clean drinking water, overseen the development of affordable housing, commissioned a garbage recycling plant, opened up skills training centres with multi-sector partners and taken several steps to decongest the city. We will also have provided for mini hospitals in each constituency and ensured that the sewer system works in this city.
Lusaka needs an Executive Mayor that will clean up the city, whether it’s cleaning up the streets and compounds or cleaning up the council by taking on the fight against corruption. Lusaka needs an Executive Mayor that is ready to transform Lusaka into a city of opportunity for our people.
Make no mistake; I am a Mayor on a Mission.
