MATIBINI LAUNCHES BOOK ON PARLEY HISTORY

By Sharon Kunda- The National Assembly of Zambia has launched the first edition of a parliamentary publication titled ‘Members of Northern Rhodesia Legislative Council and the National Assembly of Zambia 1924 to 2021’.

Speaking during the launch today, Speaker of the National Assembly PATRICK MATIBINI said the publication contains information on members of the Legislative Council who served from 1924 to 1964 as well as Members of Parliament who have served from 1964 to date.

Dr. MATIBINI has noted that the National Assembly of Zambia has a long and rich history which is traceable to 1924 when the Northern Rhodesia Legislative Council was established as a legislative branch of Government.

He explained that the publication includes brief profiles of the members of the Legislative Council and the National Assembly of Zambia, year of establishment of some of the constituencies and their evolution over the years and Government portfolios held by
members during their tenure, among others.

Dr. MATIBINI said the information provided will be useful to the public in appreciating the evolution of the constituencies and will also serve as a quick reference resource for stakeholders who wish to obtain some information about MPs and the institution.

And Clerk of the National Assembly CECILIA MBEWE said the publication represents a huge achievement for the National Assembly of Zambia in documenting the history of Parliament.

And in passing a vote of thanks, Mongu Central Member of Parliament MWILOLA IMAKANDO said it is gratifying that the National Assembly has evolved through 12 parliaments and has continued to enjoy full legislative powers and democracy.
