“MATERNAL MORTALITY RATE STILL HIGH”

Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya is concerned that maternal mortality rates are still high in health facilities.
Dr Chilufya has since called on medical personnel to help improve the situation.
The Minister says more mid-wives will be recruited and that government is planning on constructing mothers’ shelters in rural areas, so that pregnant mothers who live in distant places can access health care services closer.
Dr Chilufya was speaking today at the National Planning Launch for the 2019-2021 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and 2019 budget.
He said that government is going to focus on improving health security in its strategic plan.
Dr Chilufya says government will also invest in Zambia Public Health Institution to be able to contain disease out breaks.
Meanwhile, Dr Chilufya disclosed that Management at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University has now been put in place.
He said Professor Elywin Chomba is the New Vice Chancellor while Professor Sekelani Banda and Professor Kasonde Bowa will be the Two Deputy Vice Chancellors at the Medical University.
Dr Chilufya says the move is aimed at increasing the training capacity of health workers.
