Lupando Mwape’s body arrives today

The Family of the late Lupando Mwape have expressed profound gratitude to President Edgar Lungu for evacuating the Former Vice President.

Family spokesperson, who is also former Deputy Minister of Finance, Newton Nguni says the family was grateful that the action by President Lungu accorded Hon. Mwape with an opportunity to access the best specialized medical treatment.

Speaking during the Funeral service which was held for Hon Mwape at St Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Craighall Park in Johannesburg, Nguni says he was saddened by social media reports that indicated that the decision to evacuate Hon. Mwape was delayed and condemned such reports for lacking sensitivity.

He noted that local doctors were investigating his medical case as he was transfered from Luanshya, to Ndola and later to Lusaka before he was evacuated to South Africa.

He further thanked President Lungu for declaring three days of national mourning in honour of Hon. Mwape.

And Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa Emmanuel Mwamba said the remains of Hon. Mwape would be repatriated to Zambia on Friday.

According to a statement released by First Secretary Press and Public Relations at the Zambian mission in Pretoria Naomi Nyawali, Mwamba says Zambia was one of the few countries in SADC Region with a fully fledged cancer hospital.

He says recent complicated medical operations done at the University Teaching Hospital(UTH) such as separation of siamese twins, and heart open-heart surgery was testimony of the progress the country was making in the sector.

Mwamba added that the country had continued to improve on gaps that have emerged regarding medical laboratories, and diagnosis equipment to afford Zambians access to quality health.

He informed the gathering that President Lungu was extremely saddened by the death of the former vice president.

He disclosed that President Lungu had ordered the evacuation of Hon. Mwape with the strong hope that the specialized treatment he would receive would save his life.

The service was attended by the widow, Mrs. Happy Mwenya Mwape, and was president over by Father Harrison Mulenga.
