Loss Of Business In The Mining Sector Leaves Threatens The Economies Of Over 2000 Small Scale Miners

By Michael Kaluba

Over 2000 Small Scale Miners under Chapamo Mineral Resources on the Copperbelt have been affected by the loss of business in the mining sector resulting from the halting of operations at some mines and the economic disruption brought about by COVID 19 this year.

Chapamo Mineral Resources Director Kelvin Tembo disclosed to Phoenix News that the fluctuations in pricing on the London Metal Exchange since the advent of Covid19 has forced small scale mining operations to halt, leaving thousands of families in Kitwe and other mining areas without a source of income.

Mr. Tembo who could not estimate the losses in revenue says safety worries, Covid19 public health guidelines and the placing of some mines on care and maintenance have all contributed to Chapamo suspending its operations entirely.

He adds that Chapamo Mineral Resources feels small scale miners should be allowed to operate normally beginning January 2021 under public health guidelines especially that the pandemic has prolonged its ravaging of the globe.
