LOCAL FARMERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF POTATO, ONION BAN

By Patricia Banda

A cooperative of 55 farmers in Lusaka has embarked on growing Irish potatoes for supply to local markets.

CHARLES MWIINGA, a representative of the group has told ZNBC News that the Community based multipurpose cooperative is taking advantage of good agriculture policies by government such as banning importation of potatoes and onions.

Mr. MWIINGA said the farmers have already secured the market to supply to Shoprite and Pick and Pay.

He explained that the cooperative has been given land in Chikankata District where it will be able to start the cultivation of Irish potatoes in the next three months.

Mr. MWIINGA adds that the cooperative wants to incorporate many farmers across the 10 provinces.
