LIFWEKELO CHALLENGES IBA TO ACT

A concerned citizen has called on the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) to deal with media houses that are promoting hate speech and spreading falsehoods.
Edwin Lifwekelo says the IBA should not wait for the country to go up in flames before it can act.
He says a situation where people issue false statements that border on hate speech cannot be allowed to continue.
Mr. Lifwekelo told ZNBC News that media houses need to be reminded that they have a duty to protect the people by not allowing irresponsible individuals to issue unsubstantiated statements on their stations.
He said IBA, Ministry of Information and Zambia police need to move in and engage media houses.
Mr. Lifwekelo said there is need to ensure media house are compelled to adhere to the minimum professional standards as they conduct their work.
