LAZ Backpedals, Now Backing Referendum
The Law Association of Zambia has finally seen the light on the referendum that will be held alongside the general elections by backing the bill of rights vote.
LAZ president Linda Kasonde has said LAZ had decided to backpedal on the their earlier position as this year’s referendum presents the closest opportunity that government had acceded to people’s demands to have
the referendum held after several attempts in the past.
Kasonde said the bill of rights presented expanded civil and political rights that will be a progressive step.
LAZ had initially opposed holding the referendum alongside general elections but has since encouraged the masses to vote yes during the referendum.
She said the bill of rights will give citizens an opportunity to take on the authorities where they failed to fulfil economic and social rights.
The referendum will be held alongside general elections with the referendum question currently translated in local languages.
