Lawyer in Court Over dishonoured Cheque

By Hector SimfukweA Lusaka Lawyer has been taken to court for allegedly issuing dishonoured cheques contrary to the National Payment Systems Act Number One of 2007.Albert Banda of Ngwerere Road in Chelstone appeared in the Lusaka Magistrate Court yesterday and pleaded not guilty to issuing dishonored cheques worthy more than K160,000.Banda is charged with eight counts of issuing dishonoured cheques.In one of the counts, it is alleged that with intent to defraud, Banda willfully issued one First National Bank cheque to Maneku Njamba in the sum of K25,000.The money in question was supposed to be drawn on Alberto Ngoyi Advocates account.This was despite Banda knowing that the said account was insufficiently funded.And when the matter came up for commencement of trial before Magistrate Ruth Kapulu today, Banda, who is on police bond was not before court.The Defence lawyer informed the court that he had just received information that the suspect is unwell.In her ruling, Magistrate Kapulu warned the suspect to take court proceedings seriously.She said the court will be forced to issue a bench warrant if the suspect does not attend the next session.
