Kundananji scores in loss to Bayern, Becomes Zambia’s top goalscorer in UWCL

Zambia Women’s national team forward Rachel Kundananji become the country’s all-time top goalscorer in the UEFA Women’s Champions League following her goal in BIIk Kazyugurt 6-1 loss at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Kundananji scored a consolation goal in the 81st minute as the Kazakhstan giants suffered a humiliating 6-1 loss at the hands of Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 16 tie.

The goal was her second in the Women’s Champions League. Her first goal came against Finish side Pallokerho-35 Vantaa in August 2019.

The goal against Vantaa tied her on one goal with Misozi Zulu who became the first Zambian player to score in UEFA Women’s Champions League after scoring earlier in that same match.

First-half goals from Lineth Beerensteyn and Lea Schüller set up a 19th successive win in 2020/21 for Bayern, who stretched their lead after the breakthrough Linda Dallmann (2), Hanna Glas, and substitute Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir.

Countrymate Prisca Chilufya who joined the Kazakhstani Women’s Championship side from the Airwomen, Red Arrows on a two-year deal last month was handed her debut as a substitute against the German giants. Chilufya came from the bench to replace in the 67th minute.

The Copper Queens duo and their teammates will be looking to do the impossible on Wednesday, March 10th when they visit Germany for the second leg. Bayern eliminated BIIK at this same stage last season.

Elsewhere, defending Champions Lyon beat Brøndby 2-0 while Barcelona thrashed Fortuna 4-0 with the only tie left involving Paris St Germain and Sparta Praha set to take place on Tuesday, March 9th.
