Mayor of Kitwe Christopher Pikiti Kang’ombe has been elected as president of the Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ).

The youthful Kang’ombe who was fielded by the ruling Patriotic Front, beat Chilanga Council Chairperson Theresa Maipande-Malila of the UPND by 56 votes to 42.

The 31-year-old is an experienced civic leader, having served as councillor for Riverside Ward for 10 years. He first won the seat as an independent, while still a student at the Copperbelt University before retaining the seat on the PF ticket.

He recently became the first ever elected mayor of the largest city on the Copperbelt following the August 11 elections.
