Kasempa residents shun indoor residue spraying

ZANIS— Kasempa District Malaria Elimination Officer, Yubai Ngenda says many people in the area are refusing to have their houses sprayed during the indoor residue spraying exercise.

Mr Ngenda said it is unfortunate that people are refusing to have their homes sprayed against mosquitos.

“Government is spending a lot of money to buy these insecticides to protect us from malaria. It is sad that some people refuse to have their houses sprayed. It is surprising that the majority of the people who refuse to have their houses sprayed are the learned ones,” he said.

He has since implored all the stakeholders to intensify malaria sensitization in order to eliminate the disease by 2021.

Mr Ngenda said the Ministry of Health is targeting to increase the number of malaria free catchment area to 100 percent by 2021.

He said currently the malaria free catchment area stands at 0 percent.

“Right now we do not have any health facility catchment area which has no malaria, so we want to increase from 0 to 100 percent,” Mr Ngenda said.

Mr Ngenda stated that the ministry has come up with a number of interventions to ensure that malaria is eliminated by 2021.

Speaking during a malaria taskforce meeting in Kasempa, Mr Ngenda said one such intervention is the use of treated mosquito nets by residents.

“For us to control malaria we need to use long lasting insecticide bed nets and we also conduct indoor spraying,” he said.
