Kagem goes wild for life

In efforts to encourage conversation and awareness on the environmental conservation, Kagem Mining Limited, has taken up the sponsorship of the top three prizes for this year’s World Environment Day inter-school quiz under the theme ‘Go Wild for Life’.

“Kagem attaches high importance to the restoration and rehabilitation of the environment within which it operates hence our enthusiasm in supporting such programmes which ensures that the culture of preservation is instilled and passed on to the next generation,” said Kagem’s Corporate and Social Sustainability Manager Mwaka Mulenga.

Ten schools from the Copperbelt participated in the preliminary rounds of the inter-school quiz organised by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and held at Helen Kaunda Girls Secondary School in Kitwe on May 26, 2016. Two of the schools emerged finalists and will travel to the ZNBC Kitwe studios to shoot the finale that is to be aired on June 6.
Children from the Kagem-supported Chapula Secondary School earned itself a spot in the finals by making the top two. Kagem has gone further to support the school with T-shirts, transport, to and from the competition venues and meals for the participants and teachers.
“We are especially proud of the pupils as this is the first time the school is participating in the quiz. Environmental management and conservation truly is a community effort. Each one doing their part and we the pupils are doing their part by making the case for the environment,” said Mrs Mulenga.
The prize-giving ceremony for the quiz will be held in Chingola on June 7 to coincide with the World Environment Day celebrations.
On the home front Kagem is working with the students at the school to impress on them the importance of preserving both flora and fauna with plans to donate fruit trees such as mango, guava, papaya, oranges, lemons towards the school’s first orchard.
