KAFUE TO HOST $122M SUGAR PLANTATION & PROCESSING PLANT

Agriculture Minister Micheal Katambo has applauded a private investor for starting a project aimed at developing the sugar plantation and a processing plant in Kafue District.
Mr. Katambo says the project called Chiansi Farming Limited promoted by Agro Trade Exchange Zambia Limited is expected to benefit 400 farmers through the out-grower system, with about 5 to 10 hectares for each farmer.
Speaking when he visited the project’s location in Kafue, Mr. Katambo observed that the planned investment is in line with President Edgar Lungu’s vision for increased investment in the agricultural sector.
And Project Consultant Don Maila said the investment involves the development of 8,000 hectares of sugar plantation and a sugar processing plant with 4,000 metric tons processing capacity.
Mr. Maila said the project is expected to benefit over 2000 people and will cost about 86 million United States Dollars out of the which 36 Million US Dollars is meant for the processing plant.
