… Mwanza says a notorious Copperbelt gang not only ssaulted but also humiliated her in presence of the police

Lusaka (04-03-19) A notorious Copperbelt gang yesterday day attacked and assaulted a female defenseless journalist Mutale Mwanza in full view of the police who did nothing to protect her.
Ms. Mwanza working for Hot Fm Radio in Lusaka was not only assaulted but also humiliated in Kitwe’s Mulenga area where she had gone to cover President Edgar Lungu who was in the area inspecting government projects.
Mutale, who was in the company of Ethel Chanda and other female journalists were in the Presidential Entourage coming from Kanfinsa where president Lungu had earlier in the day launched 91 police housing units.
“We stopped over at Mulenga compound where president Lungu was inspecting the operationalism of water kiosks.”
While walking back to the vehicle, Mwanza explained some boys who call themselves jereboys started throwing water bottles, poured water at her.
“Not only that, Mutale explained, the boys that stood near a blue Toyota Hilux parked near the car she was using also insulted.
Despite me running into the car the continued to throw water bottles and insulted us” Mutale explained.
She recalled that the boys that attacked were over 10 at the back of the Hilux.
She regretted that tried in vain to intervene when the Jerabos started attacking her and her friends.
Mwanza identified Chisha Kanama, a well known jerebo in kitwe as one of the boys who was in the company of the attackers.
“I recognized the driver of the blue hilux, it was Chisha kanama a well know jerabo in Kitwe, these boys seemed to be having fun and just having a go at us while the police watched helplessly.”
As we tried to drive off, Mwanza narrated, the police stopped us and told us not to drive in the direction of the Blue hilux.
“Don’t drive into that direction, those boys Balisamwa,” Mwanza recalled the advice from the police.
The police told us that the notorious boys were capable of doing anything to us.
“It was at this moment that I got off the car and I decided to address the police.”
“How dare you say that to me, you are the police and it is your job to protect citizens,” Mwanza recalled addressing the police.
She added that you watched these boys spill water on us, insult us and pour water on our car.
When asked if she could have any idea of why she was attacked by the Jerabos, Mutale said she thinks it’s in connection with a report she did over the black mountain some time back, in the report Mutale Exposed how unsafe mining is at the black mountain among other things.
“ I suspect I was attacked and verbally assaulted because of the report I did some time back over the black mountain, in my report I talked about need to put in safety measures which will help those who operate from the mountain and avoid deaths, I believe my report was misunderstood and they thought I was advocating for the closer of the mountain” Mutale said.
