Kaseba, who is widow to late President Michael Sata is not even a UPND member but widely seen as riding on her husband name and also a sure bet for the opposition party to dilute Patriotic Front’s Inonge Wina’s feminine appeal.
The move leaves Hichilema’s two vice presidents the loyal Dr Canisius Banda and the more vibrant Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba in the cold after the duo sacrificed their right to contest parliamentary seats anticipating being named as running mates.
Former Vice President Guy Scott has prevailed over Hichilema to field Kaseba as his running mate in this election.
Kaseba’s political ambitions came to the fore after the death of her husband when she offered herself as a candidate for the leadership of the ruling PF.
She was politically bruised and stepped back and will be back to the fore should her nomination be confirmed by the UPND who have another round of meetings today.
The move may not go down well with long standing and loyal members of the UPND who have been elbowed out of the way by new comers.
Hichilema and his running mate will file his nomination on Friday between 09:00 and 11:00 hours.
