Lusaka (14-01-22) – “It was a fruitful meeting with Immigration”, Lawyer
as former and current Rwandese refugees association in Zambia spokesperson with Immigration convened.
The lawyer who accompanied the spokesperson of former and current Rwandese refugees association in Zambia, Isaac Simbeye, told journalists that the meeting with department was cordial, constructive and promising. Mr Simbeye said that in his view the department expressed genuine commitment to hearing and finding an amicably and legal way of resolving the concerns raised by the Former Rwandan Refugees who currently are living in Zambia either as people of special concern or refugee statuses.
He said that although there could be corrupt elements in the institution, Mr. Simbeye stressed that it would be inappropriate to implicate the entire department as doing so puts the department in an embarrassing situation and is tantamount to making it difficult for the department to discharge its statutory duties.
Meanwhile, Simbeye said the department’s willingness to hear out the concerns of the former and current Rwandese refugees appears genuine as it expressed readiness to meet with the former and current Rwandese refugees’ leaders in the coming days to better appreciate their worries.
Mr. Jean Claude Ntihabose, the spokesperson of former and current Rwandese refugees association in Zambia was invited for the meeting by the department of immigrations following, his recent allegations that the immigration department was corrupt and went on to plead for protection.
Following this plea, the Immigration department summoned Ntihabose to present himself for discussions at their Kent Building housed headquarters at 0900 Friday.
Ntihabose confirmed that he was summoned through a phone call he received from a call number 0211254384 at 13:27. “I was told to report myself to room 112 at 0900,” he said. However, he added he was not told the reasons why he was being summoned since the caller informed him that the reason will be communicated to him upon arrival.
A fortnight ago, Jean Claude Ntihabose, a Former and Current Rwanda Refugees Association in Zambia spokesperson informed the public through the media that there is an ongoing well-coordinated, and growing harassment of his people followed by arrests and detentions in jail targeting especially former Rwandese Refugees who are currently living in Zambia with a “Temporary Permanent Resident” status.
He also accuses some Immigration officers of conspiring to extort money from other current Rwandese Refugees.
