The United Party for National Development has settled for former First Lady Dr Christine Kaseba- Sata as the running mate for presidential Candidate Hakainde Hichilema.
Insiders in UPND have told Zambian Eye that finally it has been agreed that the widow to the PF founder runs with Hichilema. She is expected to be announced before Friday.
Dr Kaseba- Sata has been in the recent past taken a low profile despite being linked to the UPND for the past few months now.
She was one of the contenders for the Patriotic Front presidency after the demise of her husband. She how ever didn’t make it and has distanced herself from the Edgar Lungu led party and government.
Dr Kaseba-Sata’s standing as the UPND running mate is seen to be the game changer as the opposition party had systematically kept the name under wrap from the public.
The UPND has in the recent past been the recipient of Sata staunch allies like Guy Scott, Miles Sampa and Sata’s own son Mulenga.
Dr Kaseba -Sata is a medical practitioner who mostly kept a low profile during her husband’s hyper and frenzied days in the opposition.
The UPND’s announcement of its running mate has come after such a long wait from a cross section of society across different political spectrum
The Party has two Vice Presidents, the learned medical Doctor, poet and writer in the name of Dr Canisus Banda and former Minister of Defense in the Sata led government and undeniably one of the front running mate favorite Geofrey Bwalya Mwamba.
The coming of Dr Kaseba- Sata as the running mate and subsequent Republican Vice President if the UPND forms government is seen as a unifying factor and balance striker between Canisuis Banda and GBM.
The UPND has followed and emulated the rulling party, the Patriotic Front in making a woman running mate.
