Zambian Association of Indigenous Tour Operators ZATO Secretary General KELVIN MWELWA has urged the government to consider increasing funding to grant aided institutions under the ministry of tourism in the 2024 national budget.

Mr. MWELWA has told ZNBC news that institutions such as the National Heritage Conservation Commission and Department of Wildlife need more funding to maintain and improve infrastructure at various tourism sites.

Mr. MWELWA says it is only when infrastructure in the tourism sector is improved that the country will begin to attract more tourists.

And Mr. MWELWA has urged the government to find means of ensuring all monies paid by tourists that come into the country are paid from Zambia.

He says many tourists pay for services in advance from other countries and just come to enjoy the country without leaving any money, a situation that is reducing forex for the country.

He is also urging the government to support indigenous tour operators with grants as a means of growing the industry because whatever profits they will make, will be retained in the country.
