Lusaka, Zambia24 (17-06-2024) – In a definitive move to solidify Zambia’s standing as a premier Business Tourism Destination, Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba announced plans to host two influential UN Tourism conferences in 2024. This strategic initiative aims to harness the potential of the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector to drive economic growth and enhance Zambia’s global tourism profile.
During a press conference, Minister Sikumba highlighted Zambia’s role in hosting the 67th Meeting of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa and the 2nd UN Tourism Regional Conference on Brand Africa. Scheduled to take place from July 22nd to 24th, 2024, in Livingstone, these conferences are expected to attract a substantial delegation of over 300 global participants. Among them will be UN Tourism Member States, affiliate members, tourism professionals, technical experts, and representatives from financial institutions.
“The decision to host these prestigious UN Tourism conferences underscores Zambia’s commitment to positioning itself as a leading MICE destination,” remarked Minister Sikumba. “These events not only showcase Zambia’s rich cultural heritage and natural landscapes but also provide a platform for crucial discussions and networking opportunities within the global tourism community.”
The conferences coincide with the launch of Zambia’s Tourism Centre of Excellence, a pivotal initiative aimed at advancing skills development across the tourism sector. Minister Sikumba emphasized the center’s role in elevating service standards and promoting sustainable tourism practices throughout Zambia and beyond.
Minister Sikumba encouraged local tourism professionals, private sectors, and investors to register promptly via the dedicated online portal. This proactive engagement is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing and catalyze growth within Zambia’s tourism industry.
With Zambia projecting a GDP growth contribution of 4.7% by year-end, up from 4.3% in 2023, Minister Sikumba emphasized the MICE sector’s significant role in driving economic recovery and fostering sustainable development.
As preparations for these landmark conferences intensify, Zambia anticipates a transformative impact on its tourism landscape, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable growth and global collaboration in the tourism sector.
