A Coxswain linked to the drowning of six Seventh Day Adventists -SDA- youths on Lake KARIBA in SIAVONGA early this year, has been sentenced to one year in jail.
JONATHAN HAAJAYA, who was slapped with manslaughter, has been incarcerated for one year with hard labour by LUSAKA High Court Judge KENNETH MULIFE.
Judge MULIFE however acquitted two fishermen OSBORNE MAMBO and TYSON HACHIYAKO who were jointly charged with Mr. HAAJAYA.
Handing down the judgment, Judge MULIFE noted that the prosecution has proven all six counts of manslaughter against Mr. HAAJAYA, 25.
Judge MULIFE said he has imposed custodial sentence on Mr. HAAJAYA but noted that he has not imposed a long sentence on the convict because he is a first offender and contributory negligence was established against the deceased persons.
Meanwhile acquitting the two fishermen , Judge MULIFE said the prosecution failed to establish the case against them.
