HH RESOLVED TO REDUCE POVERTY, HUNGER
By Ruth Chayinda:
Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ngosa Simbyakula says President Hakainde Hichilema is resolved to reduce poverty by implementing policies aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and other vulnerabilities such as the socio-e
onomic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Simbyakula says Zambia is implementing social protection programmes whose coverage is targeted at the poor and vulnerable with a special focus on reducing poverty, hunger, vulnerability among women, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities.
The Zambian envoy to the United Nations says Government is working towards streamlining existing social protection programmes to make them more efficient.
Dr. Simbyakula said this during the ongoing 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He said President Hichilema has also committed to undertake agricultural transformation to end hunger and improve nutrition in Zambia.
Dr. Simbyakula said Government has embarked on the process of re-designing the Farmers Input Support Programme -FISP- to ensure deserving citizens have access to affordable agricultural inputs such as fertilizers among others.
He stated that Government had developed the National Policy on Ageing to address the interrelated issues of old age, including poverty, health care, food, nutrition and employment in an effort to reaffirm its commitment of inclusive development.
This is contained in a statement issued to ZNBC news by First Secretary for Press to the Permanent Mission of Zambia to the United Nations – Wallen Simwaka.
