HH declares drought a national disaster

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has declared the drought the country is experiencing a national disaster and emergency.

President HICHILEMA says the declaration has been necessitated by the destruction of one million hectares of farmland which has affected over one million households countrywide.

He has also outlined measures government has put in place to mitigate the effects of the drought.

Speaking at a press briefing at State House in Lusaka, President HICHILEMA said a scientific study conducted with the support of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit –DMMU- has revealed that 84 out of the 116 districts have been affected by the drought

President HICHILEMA said the effects of the drought have forced government to take measures to protect citizens.

He announced that more resources will be channelled towards responding to the drought.
