President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA says investing in women is not only a moral obligation or human rights issue but a strategic way to accelerate national development.

And Mr. HICHILEMA says there are less women in decision making positions in Zambia because the past political regimes did not create a conducive environment for women to excel, especially in politics.

He says in a bid to enhance women participation and the sharing of ideas, he will be hosting women groups at State House on a quarterly basis.

President HICHILEMA notes that while the government has made progress to empower and improve the livelihoods of women, a lot more still needs to be done.

And in a bid to improve the livelihoods of women in rural areas, President HICHILEMA has directed local authorities to use the Constituency Development Fund -CDF- to take water close to the people in order to stop women from walking long distances to fetch
ater.

President HICHILEMA says government also remains committed to improving health services through the construction of maternity annexes and running water at all health facilities.

President HICHILEMA said this in Livingstone today during the commemoration of the International Women’s Day.

Speaking at the same event, Non-Government Gender Organizations Coordinating Council Board Chairperson , GRACE SINKAMBA, commended the government for it’s efforts in promoting gender equality through the appointment of women to high decision making position.

Mrs. SINKAMBA, however, expressed concern on the number of women in decision making positions in the country.

And United Nations Resident Coordinator, BEATRICE MUTALI, said this year’s International Women’s Day commemoration calls for more investment in ending violence against women.

Ms. MUTALI said the United Nations will continue investing in women empowerment programmes in Zambia.

And Southern Province Minister, CREDO NANJUWA, said women in the province have greatly benefitted from the empowerment programmes of the New Dawn Government.
