HH ABOLISHES DEATH PENALTY, DEFAMATION OF PRESIDENT

BY PAUL SHALALA

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has abolished the Death Penalty and Defamation of the President provisions in the Penal Code.

The President today assented to the Penal Code Amendment Bill Number 25 of 2022 that has abolished the imposition of the death penalty and repealed the offence of the Criminal Defamation of the President.

The two penalties have been in the Zambian laws since the pre-independence era.

This is according to a statement issued to ZNBC News by Presidential Spokesperson ANTHONY BWALYA in Lusaka.

The death penalty was a mandatory sentence for people convicted for capital offences while Defamation of the President had seen many people sentenced to jail terms for insulting the President using various platforms.
