GOVT URGES PRIVATE SECTOR TO ADDRESS HOUSING DEFICIT

By Masauso Mkwayaya

Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister CHARLES MILUPI has urged the private sector to partner with Government in building housing units in order to reduce the accommodation deficit in Zambia.

Mr. MILUPI says if the status quo remains; the deficit is likely to grow to 3 million housing units by the year 2030 from the current 1.5 million.

And Mr. MILUPI says the growing demand of decent housing is caused by the rapid increase in population as well as the high levels of urbanization.

The Minister said this during a ground breaking ceremony for Emerald Housing Project which is being done by Africa Panorama Investment Group.

And Africa Panorama Investment Group Marketing Director, DON WU, said 7-hundred affordable housing units will be constructed in Lusaka’s Chamba Valley area.

Mr. WU said the project will create 1-thousand jobs for local people.

And speaking at the same event, Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia -FFTUZ- President CHINGATI MSISKA called on Government and private sector employers to come up with policies that will enable employees to have access to affordable housing finance and mortgages.

The Emerald Housing Project is working with Church mother bodies as well as leading trade unions in the country.
