GOVT URGED TO SUSTAIN DOWNWARD TRAJECTORY IN COST OF LIVING

By Chileshe Mwango

The Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition Alliance –CSO-SUN-is urging government to sustain the downward trajectory in the cost of living and ensure the gains made so far are not lost.

Reacting to the Jesuit Center For Theological Reflections basic needs basket that has shown a reduction in the cost of living for the month of May by K85 from K9, 411.50 in April to K9, 326.41, CSO-SUN Country Coordinator Mathews Mhuru is happy that the country is now recording a reduction in the cost of living contrary to a situation in the last six months which saw a constant rise on a monthly basis.

Mr. Mhuru also notes that a K9, 000 basic needs basket is still too high for the average Zambian and makes low income earners vulnerable to poor food quality.

He tells Phoenix News in an interview that it is for this reason that the current gains are sustained so that the cost of living reduces further.
