Govt to release $14M to complete Lusaka water, drainage project

Reuben Chomba-Water Development, Sanitation and Environment Protection Minister MIKE MPOSHA say the government will release over 14 million dollars for the completion of the Lusaka water supply, sanitation and drainage project.

Mr. MPOSHA says this is out of 43 Million dollars required to complete the project.

He disclosed this when millennium project completion agency Zambia limited chief executive officer PAMELA BWALYA paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Lusaka today.

Mr. MPOSHA however explained that as of November 15, 2021, over 10 Million dollars has been disbursed towards the completion of the project.

He said President HAIKINDA HICHILEMA’s administration remains committed to completing all sanitation and drainage projects.

Mr. MPOSHA further said the aim of the project is to expand access, and improve reliability of water supply and sanitation.

He adds that improved drainage services in urban and peri-urban areas of the city, is key to reduce waterborne diseases.

Meanwhile, the Millennium Project Completion Agency Zambia Limited Chief Executive PAMELA BWALYA Officer disclosed that currently the project stands at 84 percent completion stage.

Ms. BWALYA however said inadequate funding to meet payment obligations since 2019 and vandalism has been the major challenge faced in completing the project.

She said there is urgent need by government and other key stakeholders to properly invest in water supply and Sanitation.
