GOVT THANKS FAO

(NAIS) Government has thanked the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN) for supporting the Ministry of Agriculture with sixty motorbikes valued at 250,000 United States dollars to be used by agricultural extension officers in some parts of the country.

Agriculture Minister Micheal Katambo says the motorbikes will assist the operations of officers who are usually faced with transport challenges.

He said this in a speech read for him by Agriculture Permanent Secretary Songowayo Zyambo during the World Food Day commemoration in Lusaka under the theme ‘Grow, Nourish, Sustain, together our actions are our future’

Mr. Katambo emphasized the need for global efforts in agriculture to target the production of nutrient dense foods which are produced through sustainable ways such as smart agriculture practices and conservation agriculture.

He said government will continue to intervene and ensure that farmers have access to quality farming inputs under the Farmer Input Support programme to improve agriculture productivity thereby improving the nutrition status of the country.

And the United Nations resident Coordinator Coumba Mar Gadio has emphasized the need for the empowerment of women for the country to effectively grow and ensure nourishment with high quality food.
