GOVT SIGNS MOU WITH HOUSING DEVELOPERS
The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has partnered with two private housing developers with the aim of tackling the increasing housing deficit.
And the Ministry has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with Horizon Properties Limited and Habitat for Humanity Zambia.
The MoU with Horizon Properties Limited is on purchase of land and Housing Units by Government employees while the one with Habitat for Humanity Zambia is for collaboration in delivery of low-cost housing units for the vulnerable households residing in infomal settlements.
Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Permanent Secretary, DANNY MFUNE, who signed on behalf of the Ministry, said the development demonstrates government’s aggressive determination to reducing the housing deficit in the country which, if unattended to, is envisaged to reach three million by 2030.
Mr MFUNE said government has decided to partner with the private sector because the increasing housing deficit cannot be managed by government alone.
He said he is aware that Horizon Properties Limited intends to put up environmental friendly housing units, a development which government supports fully.
For Habitat for Humanity Zambia, Mr MFUNE said the MoU is a huge step in the right direction as it aims at addressing housing challenges among the vulnerable.
Meanwhile, Habitat for Humanity Zambia, National Director MATHABO MAKUTA said her organisation is aware of the housing challenges faced by the aged and vulnerable in society.
She added that Habitat for Humanity Zambia will scale up its efforts in ensuring that there is adequate accommodation for the vulnerable in society.
And Horizon Properties Chief Executive Officer SAUL KIWEMPINDI said it is gratifying that government has allowed the private sector to participant in the housing sector.
Dr KIWEMPINDI said his company will ensure that it helps government in reducing the housing deficit in the country.
