GOVT SCALES DOWN INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS

Government has scaled down the commemorations for the 56th Independence anniversary, in adherence to the public health guidelines in advent of Covid-19.

In a statement availed to ZNBC news today, Secretary to the Cabinet, Simon Miti announced a series of restrictive measures for the occasion.

Dr. Miti said among the measures is the restriction of the number of people to take part in the wreath laying, as well as the Investiture ceremony at State House.

He said only 1-hundred people have been invited to attend the Investiture ceremony, with focus on those who will be awarded by President Edgar Lungu.

And Dr Miti said the Independence commemorations will start with the hoisting of the flag tomorrow October 23, followed by wreath laying at the Freedom Statue, on Saturday, October 24.

The Investiture ceremony will later be hosted by President Lungu at State House on Saturday.

All events will be covered live on ZNBC television.

Dr Miti has since advised the public to follow the proceedings on ZNBC television.

The 56th independence commemorations are under the theme 24TH October 2020, Zambia AT 56: One Land, One Nation – Building Our Future Proud and Free.
