Govt Happy With Donor Food Relief Efforts

Government says it is happy with the support it is receiving from partners in efforts to end the hunger situation.Minister in the Office of the Vice President Olipa Phiri says fighting the hunger situation requires concerted efforts from various stakeholders.Ms. Phiri was speaking when she saw off relief food to be distributed to affected areas in Western, Eastern and Southern Provinces.She said Government is doing everything possible to ensure that affected families are supplied with enough maize and mealie meal during this period.Ms. Phiri said government cannot address the disaster alone but with support of other stakeholders.Meanwhile, United Nations Resident Coordinator, Coumba Mar Gardio reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to working with Government in fighting hunger.Dr. Mar Gardio said the Zambian Government has been supportive of  programs being undertaken by the UN within the country.And, World Food Programme Country Representative Jennifer Bitonde said 12 Million United States dollar of the budgeted 36 million dollars has been raised for relief food mobilisation.Ms. Bitonde said WFP is dispatching 23,000 metric tons of relief food, which will be enough to feed over 1m people in the affected areas.
