GOVT CONCLUDES PROBE

By ZANIS:Government has concluded investigations into reports of some farmers who were allegedly supplied with damaged seeds that failed to geminate in Mungwi District of Northern Province.Agriculture Minister Michael Katambo who led a team of two other Ministers and several government officials to Mungwi says initial investigations revealed that the seed is fine.Mr. Katambo says his team has conducted verification visits in selected fields in Mungwi and discovered that the seeds have between 80 to 90 and 100 percent germination rate.He says the seed experts have also confirmed that the seeds have excellent germination rate.Mr. Katambo has however attributed the reported failure to other things such as rodents or mishandling of the seeds. The Minister of Agriculture said this in Mungwi when he conducted an inspection of selected fields. He was accompanied by Presidential Affairs Minister Freedom Sikazwe, Northern Province Minister Chungu Bwalya and other government officials. The Ministers also inspected and witnessed the distribution of inputs under the Famer Input Support Programme -FISP- at some depots in the district. And Mr. Bwalya said the complaints on the seeds might be because people are not used to the variety.Earlier, Dennis Tonga a Seed Analyst informed the delegation that he has not seen problems with the seeds farmers have planted in the area. The two ministers have been sent to undertake the assignment by President Edgar Lungu.
