Govt bans movement of cattle from Chisamba

Government has again banned the movement of cattle from Chisamba district of central province to other parts of the country following the resurgent of foot and mouth disease.

The disease which broke out last month has affected four farms so far in the district.

Announcing the ban at a media briefing, Livestock and Fisheries Minister Kampamba Chewe says her ministry has so far vaccinated over 12,000 animals which are a risk.

Mrs Chewe says the country is still facing the challenge of extension officers in the livestock sector to adequately reach out to farmers across the country to effectively address outbreaks of such diseases.

She says several measures have been put in place to prevent the further spread of the disease to other parts of the country, such as the mounting of road blocks in the district as well as scaling up bio safety measures.

Meanwhile the Minister has announced that progress has been made with regards the export of goats and sheep to Saudi Arabia.

Mrs Chewe says one million goats and sheep are expected to be exported to Saudi Arabia annually
