By Wamundila ChilindaGovernment will recruit about 8,000 health workers this year to meet its target of enlisting 30,000 workers in the Ministry of health by 2021.Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya says this is being done under the Health Reforms Agenda that the Ministry had embarked on since 2017.Dr. Chilufya, however, says of the targeted number, 22,000 health workers have so far been recruited with the remaining 8,000 targeted for this year. And, the Minister says under the Transformation Agenda of the health sector, government in the first legacy goal reduced the Maternal Mortality rate from 398 per 100,000 to less than 100 per 100,000 and neo natal mortality rate from 35 to less than 24 per hundred thousand births. He says all these achievements are as a result of the massive recruitments of health workers countrywide.Dr Chilufya further attributed the reductions to other interventions implemented so far, that include community involvement that has resulted in mothers booking for antenatal as early as fourteen weeks of pregnancy.Meanwhile, Dr Chilufya has disclosed that maternal mortality rate for Luapula province alone has reduced by 50%.Speaking in Mansa over the weekend, Dr. Chilufya said the from 79 cases in 2018, the province only recorded 39 in 2019 with some cases attributed to women from Democratic Republic of Congo.
