By Michael Kaluba

Mopani Copper Mines has officially written to government to appeal against the decision to reject the mines second proposal to place its Kitwe and Mufulira operations on care and maintenance.

Government through the Director of Mines recently rejected Mopani Copper Mines proposal to place its Mufulira and Kitwe operations on care and maintenance for the second time saying the mine must consider a more sustainable approach other than what it has continued to propose.

Mines Permanent Secretary Barnaby Mulenga has disclosed to Phoenix News that government is in receipt of the appeal by Mopani Copper Mines against the director of mines’ recent decision to reject the mines’ proposal to place operations under care and maintenance.

Mr. Mulenga reveals that the mining company has insisted that the future and survival of its operations is not guaranteed arguing that care and maintenance is the only solution to save the firm.

However, Mr. Mulenga has disclosed that government will soon provide a comprehensive response regarding the future of Mopani and respond to the appeal by the mining firm while the ministry continues to engage in talks with the investor.
