Gelson Fernandes Named Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer at FIFA

Former Swiss international footballer Gelson Fernandes has been promoted to Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer at FIFA, starting November 1st.

Since joining FIFA after his playing career, Gelson has made an impressive transition into football administration, demonstrating the same passion, energy, and professionalism that marked his time on the pitch.

As Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer, Gelson will play a key role in supporting the Member Associations Division, working closely with newly promoted Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov. Gelson will continue to serve as Director of Member Associations for Africa, helping drive football development across the continent.

“Gelson’s transition from footballer to administrator has been nothing short of remarkable. His positive energy and dedication to football development make him a standout leader within our organization,” said FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström.

Fernandes was part of a team of high-ranking football officials led by FIFA president Gianni Infantino who recently visited Zambia to among other things, officially open the FAZ Accommodation Centre, visit the Heroes’ Acre and held talks with President Hakainde Hichilema and FAZ president Andrew Kamanga before featuring in an exhibition match between FIFA and Zambia Legends.

Fernandez appointment was part of the world football governing body’s series of key appointments and promotions within its leadership team, reflecting the organization’s commitment to fostering talent and ensuring continued growth.

Kevin Lamour has been appointed as Chief Operating Officer, effective November 1st. Kevin, a seasoned football administrator, brings nearly 20 years of experience to FIFA, having previously served as UEFA’s Deputy General Secretary. He will oversee multiple divisions and is expected to play a significant role in shaping FIFA’s future operations.

Meanwhile, Kenny Jean-Marie, FIFA’s outgoing Chief Member Associations Officer, will depart at the end of October to pursue new projects. His leadership and vision have left an indelible mark on FIFA, particularly in the transformation of the Member Associations Division.

In addition to Kevin’s appointment, FIFA has promoted Elkhan Mammadov to Chief Member Associations Officer. Elkhan’s innovative leadership and Gelson’s passion for football development are expected to drive FIFA’s efforts to support its 211 Member Associations.

FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström expressed his confidence in the new leadership team, saying, “These changes reflect FIFA’s dedication to fostering talent and ensuring we continue to lead the way in global football development. We look forward to what the future holds under their guidance.”

The FIFA family congratulates Kevin, Elkhan, and Gelson on their new roles and extends a heartfelt thank you to Kenny for his contributions.
