GBV HINDERANCE TO DEVELOPMENT – LUNGU

President Edgar Lungu says government is resolved to fight Gender Based Violence -GBV-as it has been a hindrance to national development.

President Lungu also says there is need for strong support systems so that victims of GBV do not withdraw the cases before they are concluded by the courts of law.

He has since thanked the traditional leaders and other stakeholders for their role in the fight against GBV.

The Head of State said this in a speech read for him by Gender Minister Elizabeth Phiri during the launch of the sixteen days of Gender activism.

Speaking at the same event, Chairperson of the Non-Governmental Gender Organization Coordinating Council Mary Mulenga said her organization is concerned with the increasing cases of Political Violence.

Mrs. Mulenga said this is stopping several women from taking part in politics.

And US Charge D Affairs David Young said there is need for everyone to do their part in ending GBV.

Mr. Young proposed that government should create a fund that will support survivors of GBV.

United Nations Resident Coordinator Coumba Mar Gadio said ending GBV should be a priority.

Dr. Mar Gadio said the UN will continue working with Zambia to address the problem.

She said there is need to emulate President Edgar Lungu whose efforts to fight GBV have been recognised on the continent.
