Title contenders Zesco United and Zanaco played out to a goalless stalemate on Sunday in a week MTN/FAZ Super League encounter played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Zanaco went into the tie on 9 points having scored 13 goals but despite scoring goals for fun, the bankers had failed to keep a clean sheet heading into Sunday’s top of the bill showdown.

As for Zesco United, they are aiming for a third successive league title and they were already on six points from just two games before facing Zanaco.

The fans were expecting sparks looking at the current form of both sides in the league . When it came to the actual match on the pitch it was not as expected . The first half lacked real spark.

The second half was a bit better but the chances came far apart and were not very clear cut. Mangani Banda and Jacob Banda also dealt with everything that was through at them at the end of the day it ended in a goalless draw. Zanaco midfielder Tafadzwa Rusike was the best player on the pitch by far.

George Lwandamina’s side have won the four of the last five Zambian Premier League titles, taking their tally to seven. Since 2002, Zanaco have won the title six times.

In the last 16 years, Zesco Utd and Zanaco have 13 league titles between them, signaling a shift of power from the likes of Nkana and Mufulira Wanderers who have 13 and 9 league titles respectively.

Legendary Cup fighters Mighty Mufulira Wanderers last won the title in 1996. Within this 16 year spell, Red Arrows, Power Dynamos and Nkana have won league title once.
