Fuel shortage hits Livingstone

A number of service stations in Livingstone have run out of petrol.

Only two out of eight service stations in the tourist capital had petrol by the time a ZNBC News crew checked the situation that caused long queues for fuel.

Meanwhile, illegal fuel vendors have taken advantage of the short supply of fuel to buy the commodity in containers and resell at exorbitant prices to motorists.

LINOWE MUWELA a motorist complained that the illegal fuel vendors are making the situation worse because they keep buying petrol and diesel from service stations to resell on the streets.

Another motorist DENNIS SHALUCHISO called on government to intervene in the matter which he said is disrupting businesses.

Meanwhile Livingstone Chamber of Commerce and Industries President NAMAKAU SIYANGA urged government to find a lasting solution to fuel shortages.

Ms. SIYANGA said the disruption in the supply of fuel has a negative multiplier effect on various sectors such as tourism and the manufacturing.

Government has removed the 16 percent Value-Added Tax on imported petrol and diesel in order to increase fuel supply .
