Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO says the price of fuel will reduce in the long run once government reduces the cost of importation and starts sourcing the commodity from neighbouring Angola.

Mrs. NALUMANGO says at the moment fuel is expensive because of the cost of transporting it by trucks from the port in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania to Zambia.

The Vice President adds that government is working to revamp TAZAMA so that it can bring in fuel through the pipeline at a cheaper cost which will also help reduce the price of the commodity.

Speaking when she featured on Radio Phoenix’s Let The People Talk programme, Mrs. NALUMANGO said once Zambia starts importing fuel from Angola, the price of the commodity is likely to reduce even further.

She said the recent visit by President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA to Angola helped to facilitate the oil deal which is expected to help in energy security.

And Mrs. NALUMANGO says the price of fertilizer will only reduce when the country starts producing the product locally on a large scale.

The Vice President said government is hopeful that the price of fertilizer will reduce soon because a local company has already started producing the commodity.

Meanwhile, Mrs. NALUMANGO says speculation is fueling the skyrocketing price of mealie meal.

She assured that government will be proactive to ensure that the price is brought down.

Mrs. NALUMANGO said government takes responsibility for the increasing mealie meal prices but it will work hard to stabilize it.
