Frankie Musonda eying good start to 2023 AFCON qualifiers

Scotland-based defender Frankie Chisenga Musonda is eying a good start to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Musonda who arrived in the country on Tuesday is excited about the two qualifying games and wants to hit the ground running.

The Raith Rovers defender was speaking on arrival at Kenneth Kaunda international Airport in Lusaka.

“Very excited, there a lot of people am yet to meet, so am excited to meet them and play with some more players and hopefully we can perform well,” he said.

“As soon as i played my first game for Zambia this is what I have been looking forward to, I wanted to finish the season strong which I felt I did. Now I just want to get into these games and start off these qualifiers well.”

“The first game is very important, we want to create a good momentum and take that into the second game when we come home . It’s an exciting game to be part and am very confident in the team that we can put in a good performance,” he added.

Musonda will be playing his first home game when Zambia host Comoros on 7th June and he is excited for his home debut playing in front of thousands of fans and family.

Musonda believes there will always be pressure associated with playing for the national team but he feels it is a privilege to be on his position.

“I will have lots of family coming to the game, so it will be exciting to see them and them see me play in front of thousands of Zambians and it will be a really special day for me and my family,” he said.

“There will always be pressure when playing for your country, I just look at it as an opportunity and am blessed, lack and fortunate to be in this position. I will always give it my all and as long as I know I am doing that I will be satisfied and hopefully that brings some success to the team also.”

During the March FIFA window friendly matches, Musonda made a defensive partnership with Aime Mabika who is yet to be cleared.

Musonda wants to see Mabika cleared and back in the Chipolopolo squad as he feels the duo have a good connection.

“Hopefully it gets cleared soon and am excited to meet up with him again and hopefully we get to play together again because we seem to have a very good connection.”

On Match day 1, Zambia will be away to Ivory Coast on June 3, before hosting Comoros at National Heroes Stadium
