FQM ANNOUNCES PLANS TO LAY OFF PART OF ITS WORKFORCE STARTING NEXT MONTH

First Quantum Minerals-FQM- has announced plans to lay off part of its employees beginning next month after resolving to consolidate its First Quantum Mining Operations -FQMO- road and earthworks division, FQMO mining divisions, and other supporting services with the current activities at Kansanshi.
In a memorandum dated June 7, 2023 to all employees and signed by Chief Operating Officer, Rudi Badenhorst, Kansanshi will soon take over the mining, road, and earthwork operations from FQMO, which will continue to provide back office and support services to FQM group companies in a consolidation exercise that is presently in its early phase.
According to National Union of Miners and Allied Workers-NUMAW- president Saul Simujika, FQM aims to deem certain personnel redundant between July and October 2023 due to organizational restructuring throughout all of its business operations.
Mr. Simujika however says the notification does not specify the number of people that would be laid off because of this exercise.
And according to Mineworkers’ Union of Zambia-MUZ-president Joseph Chewe, the unions have arranged a meeting with mine management for Friday, June 9, 2023, because information regarding the impact of this decision on employees remains scanty, even after the mine formally wrote to the workers’ representatives.
