Lusaka, Zambia — (16 -08-2024) – Zambia Free Press Initiative Endorses Chief Justice’s Move for Live Court Broadcasts
LUSAKA—The Zambia Free Press Initiative (FPI) has endorsed Chief Justice Mumba Malila’s plan to draft rules for live broadcasting select court proceedings, a move seen as a crucial step toward enhancing transparency, accountability, and public access to the judicial process in Zambia.
Joan Chirwa, Founder and Executive Director of FPI, praised the decision, highlighting its alignment with FPI’s mission to promote an informed public as a foundation of democracy.
“The decision to broadcast court proceedings live is a significant advancement that ensures justice is visibly served and strengthens public trust in the legal system,” Chirwa said.
The FPI recognizes the need for detailed protocols and guidelines to ensure smooth implementation. An advisory committee, chaired by Judge Kelvin Muzenga, is developing these guidelines to balance transparency with the need for courtroom decorum.
She said FPI supports this careful approach, aiming to improve, rather than disrupt, the judicial process.
Live streaming will enhance public understanding of the legal system, dispel misconceptions about judicial openness, and make court proceedings more accessible. This move will also reduce courtroom congestion, bringing the justice process closer to the public.
As advocates for media freedom, FPI believes this initiative will enable journalists and the public to engage more effectively with the judicial system.
The organization commends the Judiciary for this progressive approach and urges the advisory committee to finalize the draft rules swiftly. FPI is ready to support the initiative and looks forward to its positive impact on Zambian society.
