Four Kidney Transplant Patients To Be Discharged

Etambuyu Katota – The four patients, who underwent kidney transplants last week at the University Teaching Hospital -UTH – in Lusaka are expected to be discharged this week.

National Coordinator Nephrologists AGGREY MWEEMBA says the patients are recovering well.

Dr. MWEEMBA, who was among the doctors that conducted the transplants, says conducting the operations locally will save government money and strengthen health systems.

He says referring patients outside Zambia for kidney transplants has been expensive.

Dr. MWEEMBA told ZNBC News that conducting the transplants locally also improves services through skills transfer.

He adds that UTH is set to conduct four to five kidney transplants every two months and the next operations will be conducted in September 2022.

Dr. MWEEMBA was speaking in an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka today.

Meanwhile, the Kidney Foundation of Zambia has praised the Ministry of Health for facilitating kidney transplants through the University Teaching Hospital – UTH in Lusaka.

Foundation Secretary General AUGUSTINE MUKUKA said the UTH has conducted four successful transplants so far.

Mr. MUKUKA said a kidney transplant is cheaper than the dialysis treatment which is more expensive.

He said the objective of the Foundation is to advocate for at least 10 transplants within a month.

Mr. MUKUKA said with the private sector coming on board to conduct transplants, it will lift the pressure off the health systems.
