FISH STOCKING AT KAFUE GORGE UNDER REVIEW

(NAIS) The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is looking at the possibility of utilising the water resource at Kafue gorge lower for aquaculture production.

Fisheries and Livestock Permanent Secretary BENSON MWENYA says the ministry is in the process of carrying out a research on the possibility of stocking fish in the water body at the newly commissioned Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station.

Dr. MWENYA says the research will determine what type of fish species will be stocked and the impact on the aquatic system.

He says government is determined to take advantage of every available opportunity to develop the aquaculture sector in the country.

Dr. MWENYA was speaking in Kafue when he paid a courtesy call on the District Commissioner, GIBSON SINKALA, at his office.

Meanwhile, Kafue District Fisheries and Livestock Coordinator PERFECTO KABANSHI said the Foot and Mouth Disease -FMD- situation in the district is stable.

Dr. KABANSHI said the department of veterinary services has managed to contain the spread of FMD to other parts of the district.
