FDD alarmed by increasing cases of mine occupational hazards

The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) is alarmed by the increasing cases of occupational hazards in the mining industry which have continued to claim the lives of workers.

FDD Chairperson for Labour Yotam Mtayachalo says the increasing number of mine fatalities especially at Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) were two miners died is worrying.

Mr Mtayachalo has therefore appealed to Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) and other mining firms to put in place adequate safety measures especially on their underground operations to avert incessant mine accidents in order to protect the lives of workers.

He adds that government should also come up with stiffer punishment against mining firms which fail to maintain high degree of safe working environments which do not meet prescribed standards.

Meanwhile the Zambia Direct Democratic Movement (ZDDM) Vice President Charles Kafumbo has expressed concern that Mopani Copper Mines has continued to record occupational fatal accidents.

Mr. Kafumbo says this could be an indication that mine safety is compromised at the mine.
