FAZ Executive Member, Blackwell Siwale, Explains West Africa Outing
Delegation leader to West Africa Blackwell Siwale has said he could not have put his own life, or that of Zambian players, at risk if there were security concerns when the Chipolopolo used a pontoon to connect to Gambia
Siwale revealed that the team used the vessel, which is the only mode of transportation connecting to Banjul in the absence of air travel, to avoid missing the Gambia friendly after cancellation of a scheduled flight.
Former Chipolopolo team doctor Joseph Kabungo released a video online showing the Zambian team on a pontoon in a bid to discredit the Andrew Kamanga-led executive committee. This was 24 hours after Dr Kabungo’s affair with Chipolopolo was terminated.
But according to Ministry of Sports officials, the cancellation of the initial connecting flight was done after government failed to honour the travel arrangements.
This was despite FAZ committing to two international friendlies before an African Cup of Nations match in Guinea Bissau.
The Ministry of Sports confirmed that the team budget was submitted to the government by but was cut to half on account of funds. Zambia eventually lost the match in Guinea Bissau 3-2 subsequently failing to qualify to the Africa Cup of Nations.
