FAZ and Napsa Stars mourn late Texan Phiri

The Football Association of Zambia is saddened by the untimely death of former Green Buffaloes and Napsa Stars player Texan Phiri.

The well-traveled coach passed on in the early hours of Wednesday, May 27th, and is survived by one child, four grandchildren, and his wife Prisca.

FAZ General Secretary, Adrian Kashala has mourned the loss of the 64-year-old gaffer saying the country has been robbed of a great personality.

“Football has been robbed of a great personality whose contribution to the game speaks for itself. Phiri was a football ambassador who spread his talents beyond our borders,” Kashala told FAZ Media.

The funeral for the late Mr. Phiri is being held in Maramba Township in Livingstone.

His former club, Napsa Stars has also expressed sadness over his demise.

“NAPSA Stars Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Former Profund Warriors player Texan Phiri who died yesterday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and may our Lord comfort you during this time of grief.”

Phiri played for Green Buffaloes from 1975 to 1980 winning three league titles before joining Profound Warriors where he stayed until 1989.

At Profund Warriors he was part of the side that finished second in the Colgate Palmolive Champion of Champions Cup after losing in the finals to Power Dynamos.

As a coach, he went to Swaziland in 1990 where he coached a number of clubs among them Malachi Chiefs, Royal Leopards, Young Green Buffaloes, and Tambuti FC before moving to Botswana in 2014 where he coached Ecco City Greens FC before returning home in March 2019 to settle in Livingstone and was coaching FAZ Division One Southern Province side Eastlands Football Academy.
