EU Concerned Over Zambia`s Lack Of Reliable Energy Supply

By Lomphande Phiri

European Union-EU- Ambassador to Zambia Jacek Jankowski has observed that Zambia’s lack of reliable energy supply is disrupting economic activities and contributes heavily to increasing the cost of production.

The EU ambassador is of the view that the unreliable energy supply is also contributing to the high cost of living for households.

Speaking at the launch of the national energy policy 2020 in Lusaka today, Mr Jankowski who is also permanent representative to COMESA says Zambia therefore needs to keep up with deployment and diversification of renewable energy and step up efforts to save power in order to meet current and future demand.

Mr Jankowski says he is aware that the policy will address challenges that the energy sector is facing and send a strong signal to investors interested in electricity markets in Zambia.

At the same event, Energy Minister Matthew Nkhuwa says the policy will enhance cost -effectiveness and efficiency in the supply of petroleum products by putting in place an efficient mechanism for the procurement of strategic stocks.

Mr Nkhuwa further states that the policy will promote security of energy sources at cost reflective pricing which will promote new investment in the sector and consequently scale up access to energy services in rural and urban areas.
